Wardpark Plantation

Walk into Wardpark Plantation and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind that feels a world away from the A74(M) that rumbles past Lockerbie a few miles south. It's a forestry block rather than a manicured country estate, so expect conifer plantations, forest rides, and the sort of quiet that comes with no visitor centre or gift shop in sight.

The main appeal here is straightforward: walking. There are trails through the trees, nothing too technical, but the paths can be muddy and overgrown depending on the season. You could spend anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours depending on which routes you take and how lost you're happy to get. Spring brings some light through the canopy; autumn's decent too if the larch trees have turned gold.

It's not a destination in itself - more a useful local walk if you're staying at Queensberry Bay or West Moss-Side, both within easy driving distance. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, and there's no playground or cafe to break things up. Dog walkers and anyone after a quiet forest ramble will rate it. The woodland attracts birdwatchers occasionally, though you'll need patience and decent binoculars to see much beyond the usual suspects.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, typical of Dumfries & Galloway's forestry access. Come with proper boots if it's been wet - drainage here isn't brilliant.
