Waukmill

The Roman fort at Waukmill sits just outside Perth, a proper slice of frontier history that most visitors drive past without realising what they're looking at. What you've got here are the earthwork remains of a Roman military installation - think flattened ramparts and ditches rather than standing stones, but the archaeology is genuine and substantial if you know what you're seeing.

It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of homework beforehand. Bring an OS map or download the details, because there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to hold your hand. The site itself is free to access and takes about 45 minutes to walk around properly, longer if you're the type to sit and try to picture the legionaries marching about. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might struggle unless they're already into Roman Scotland.

Timing-wise, go in dry conditions - the ground gets waterlogged and the whole thing becomes less legible. Spring or early autumn works well. If you're staying at Scone Camping just 1.2 miles away, it's an easy morning sortie before heading into Perth itself or exploring further into Perthshire.

Honestly, Waukmill won't blow your mind visually. But if you're camping in the area and interested in Roman Britain, it's absolutely worth the detour. Just don't expect facilities or crowds.
