Wester Bonhard

Wester Bonhard sits quietly in the Perthshire countryside near Perth, and it's one of those archaeological sites that rewards a bit of effort to find. This is a Bronze Age settlement - the remains of roundhouses from around 3,500 years ago, arranged across the landscape in a way that gives you real insight into how people actually lived back then.

What you're looking at are the stone foundations and ground plans of several domestic structures. It's not dramatic or towering, but that's rather the point. You get to piece together the story yourself - how families organised their homes, where they'd have worked, how they'd have used the space. For anyone interested in archaeology or Scottish prehistory, it's genuinely absorbing. Kids might find it underwhelming if they're expecting something visible from a distance, but if you enjoy reading the landscape and using a bit of imagination, it's well worth the detour from Perth.

The site is free and open access, which is brilliant. You'll need decent footwear and a good half-hour minimum, though you could spend longer if you're taking time to really absorb the layout. Best visited on a clear day when the light helps you see the ground patterns properly. Don't expect facilities - this is raw archaeology.
