Webb's Plantation

Walk into Webb's Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where you can't quite see the edge of the trees and the light filters through in slanted shafts. It's a forest rather than a manicured park, which means it's all the better for it.

This is a straightforward affair: pathways wind through mixed woodland just outside York, good for stretching your legs without needing to commit to a full day's hiking. The trees are dense enough that it feels genuinely isolated, even though you're minutes from the city. Walkers will appreciate the quiet here - no crowds, no visitor centres, just forest.

Timing-wise, allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many of the paths you fancy exploring. Bring proper shoes; it can get muddy after rain, and the ground's uneven in places. There's no facilities that I'm aware of, so plan accordingly.

It works well as a quick woodland break if you're based at The Hideaway@Baxby Manor - close enough for a morning walk without eating into your day. If you're after something more structured with playgrounds or picnic areas, you'd be better off at one of York's proper parks, but if you just want to disappear into the trees for a bit, this does the job. Free admission, no hassle.
