About Wenlock Edge
Most visitors come to walk it. The edge itself runs broadly north-south, and there are several access points depending on your fitness level and how much time you have. The shorter rambles work well for families with younger legs, while the longer ridge walks suit serious hikers. The woodland is dense in places, almost cathedral-like, and genuinely atmospheric in the rain.
Historyheads will appreciate that this limestone was formed in a tropical sea 400 million years ago - the rock itself tells the story. There's also ironworking heritage scattered through the area. Much Wenlock itself, just a mile or so south, is a proper medieval market town with half-timbered buildings and genuine character, so you can combine a morning walk with an afternoon exploring the high street.
Access is free and there's no gated entrance to speak of. Allow two to four hours depending on which path you choose. Spring and autumn are best - summer can be sticky and crowded, winter muddy. If you're based at any of the nearby caravan parks - Sytche is nearest, less than two miles off - the edge makes a straightforward day walk without driving anywhere.
