West Harlinghill Plantation

The forest here isn't particularly famous, which is rather the point. West Harlinghill Plantation sits just outside Diss, a proper Norfolk woodland that's been left to do its own thing for long enough that it actually feels like a wood rather than a managed park. You'll find mature trees, quiet paths, and the kind of stillness that makes you remember why you wanted to leave the house in the first place.

It's the sort of place walkers will appreciate without needing dramatic vistas or themed attractions. The paths wind through naturally enough, though they're not sign-posted like a country park - you need to know where you're going or be prepared to wander a bit. In autumn the light through the canopy is genuinely lovely, and spring brings carpets of bluebells that justify the trek if you time it right.

Don't expect facilities. There's no café, no visitor centre, no car park with a facilities block. It's working woodland, basically. That makes it brilliant for anyone staying at Applewood Countryside Holidays just down the road - you can slip out for a proper walk without the circus of a managed attraction. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull after twenty minutes unless they're the type to spot birds or pick up interesting sticks. History buffs won't find much here either.

Free to access, and worth an hour or so if you're in the area. Go on a dry day - it gets boggy.
