West Stockwith Basin

The lock is the real focal point - watching a boat ease through while you're having a coffee at the water's edge beats most paid attractions hands down.

If you've got kids, they'll chase ducks and count boats; teenagers will likely groan for five minutes then get absorbed in their phones on the benches. The location near Doncaster means you're within easy reach of proper amenities, though the basin itself feels quite removed from all that. Waterfront Country Park sits barely a tenth of a mile away, making this a natural pairing if you're based at either that or Misterton Holiday Park - you could easily do both in a morning without breaking a sweat.

Free to visit, obviously. There's informal parking nearby, though it fills up on sunny weekends. Best time is early morning on a weekday when it's genuinely peaceful, or late afternoon when the light hits the water nicely.
