West Stow Country Park

The Anglo-Saxon village reconstruction here is the real draw - a cluster of authentic-looking buildings that actually let you walk inside and get a sense of how people lived 1,500 years ago. It's not a grand or showy place, but it works. The thatched halls and timber structures feel genuine because they're based on proper archaeological evidence from the site itself.

You're wandering through open Suffolk countryside, which is lovely in itself. The lake adds something - there's a pleasant walk around it if you've got the energy, and it's genuinely quiet most days. The visitor centre has the expected interpretation boards and a small shop, but honestly the buildings do most of the talking.

History types will get the most from this. Kids aged eight upwards might find it engaging for an hour or so, though it depends entirely on the child - there's no rides or attractions, just exploration and imagination. Families with younger ones could still enjoy the grounds and the walk, even if the village itself doesn't hold their attention.

It's free to wander the grounds, though there may be a small charge for the centre - worth checking ahead. Allow two hours if you're thorough, ninety minutes if you're just passing through. You're five minutes from Bury, which makes it a useful stop rather than a full day out.

The caravan parks nearby - Kings Forest is right on the doorstep, barely a tenth of a mile away - mean you could easily base yourself here for a few nights and use West Stow as part of a broader Suffolk exploring trip.
