Westfield Copse

Westfield Copse is a proper bit of woodland just outside Witney, the sort of place you stumble upon when you're exploring the quieter corners of Oxfordshire rather than somewhere you'd necessarily plan your whole day around. It's a managed forest with decent walking tracks winding through mixed trees, and on a decent day the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely.

The walk itself is straightforward enough - mostly flat or gentle slopes, so it works well for families who don't fancy anything too demanding. You might spend an hour here comfortably, maybe ninety minutes if you take your time and let the kids scramble about on fallen logs. It's the kind of place where older children will have fun spotting wildlife in the undergrowth, though you won't see loads unless you're very lucky or go early morning.

If you're camping at Cotswold Edge over near Ducklington, Westfield Copse makes for a straightforward morning outing before you head into Witney proper. It's not dramatic or wild, but it's proper woodland walking without having to drive an hour into the Cotswolds. Free to access as far as I'm aware, and there's a small car park at the entrance.

The ground can get boggy after rain, so bring decent boots. Spring is worth timing your visit for if you can - bluebells cover the forest floor. Winter's a bit bleak and damp, if I'm honest. Go for a walk if you're in the area, but don't make a special trip.
