Whinny Wood

The woodland trails at Whinny Wood offer a proper escape from Whitby's seafront bustle, though it's more modest than the grand forests you might expect from North Yorkshire. It's a working woodland rather than some manicured nature reserve - think narrow paths through mixed trees, plenty of birdsong, and the occasional muddy patch depending on when you visit.

You're looking at anything from 20 minutes to an hour here, depending which way you wander. The paths are straightforward enough for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground, though pushchairs won't fare well. If you're after dramatic vistas or rare wildlife spotting, you'll be disappointed. But if you want somewhere to decompress for an afternoon without driving far from your holiday park base, it works.

The real draw is its proximity to Northcliffe and Seaview Holiday Parks - just under three miles away - making it a decent option if you're staying that way and the kids need getting out of the caravan. It's the sort of woodland you might stumble across by accident and quite enjoy, rather than somewhere you'd plan a day around. Spring and autumn are best, when you're not battling through midges or fighting with dense summer foliage.

Worth a morning ramble if you're based nearby. Not worth diverting from Whitby town centre specifically, but a solid addition to a park holiday if boredom strikes.
