Whitby Jet Heritage Centre

The jet trade made Whitby, and this small museum tells you exactly why. Walk in and you're looking at centuries of black stone carved into everything from mourning jewellery to ornate brooches - the sort of craftsmanship that had Victorian ladies queuing at shop doors. The displays trace how jet mining became a proper industry here, and you get a real sense of what drew people to the stuff in the first place. It's glossy, it's deep black, it takes a polish like nothing else.

History buffs will spend a good hour picking through the collection. Families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in - it's not interactive in the modern sense, more a traditional cabinet museum. The real draw is understanding Whitby itself. You can't walk the harbour or climb the steps to the abbey without knowing that jet funded half the town.

If you're staying at Whitby Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy wet-weather option. Pop in before lunch, then head to the seafront. Those based at Broadings Farm or the excellent Northcliffe & Seaview parks a few miles out will find it worth the short drive on a drizzly afternoon. Combine it with a visit to the Captain Cook museum across town - two museums, one afternoon, and you've cracked Whitby's heritage properly.
