White Hill

White Hill is Cambridge's answer to a proper viewpoint - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you'll see across the Fens with the cathedral spire poking up in the distance. It's a modest rise, barely worth mentioning if you're used to actual mountains, but in dead-flat Cambridgeshire it does the job. The walk up takes ten minutes at most, and the views reward the minimal effort. On a decent afternoon you can see for miles across the agricultural landscape that makes this part of England what it is. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

Historians and long-distance walkers get the most from it - it's the sort of spot that features on rambling routes across the county, and there's something about seeing the landscape from even a slight elevation that shifts your perspective on how medieval Cambridge sat in relation to the surrounding land. Families with young kids won't linger long. It's not a destination in itself, more a useful detour if you're based at one of the camping sites near Cambridge - Cherry Hinton or the main Camping and Caravanning Club site are barely over a mile away - and fancy a bracing walk with actual purpose.

Free to visit, no facilities up top, so go when the light is good. Late afternoon on a settled day is ideal. Don't expect crowds or fanfare. This is understated, proper East Anglian stuff.
