Whitelock Wood

The woodland around Whitelock Wood offers proper walking territory if you're based near Wigton and fancy escaping the caravan parks for a few hours. It's genuine Cumbrian forest - dense enough to feel remote, but nothing so wild that you'll need specialist kit. The trees create that soft green light you get in old woods, and on a quiet morning you might spot roe deer or hear woodpeckers working away at the trunks.

This works well if you're staying at Riverside Tourer Park or Caldbeck Camping and want to stretch your legs without driving far. It's not a ticketed attraction with visitor facilities - just access to proper woodland walking. You could easily spend 90 minutes here without feeling rushed, though two hours is more realistic if you're the type to pause and look at things.

The terrain is generally straightforward underfoot, though it'll be boggy after rain - standard Lake District stuff. Early morning or late afternoon beats midday if you want any sense of solitude. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers, though nothing Instagram-famous. Autumn's when the light really works here, slanting through the canopy in that golden way that makes you remember why you came north in the first place.

Bring proper walking shoes. The woods aren't signposted extensively, so if you hate route-finding, do some homework beforehand. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before boredom sets in. For serious walkers using it as a loop with surrounding countryside, it slots in nicely between bigger Cumbrian attractions.
