The windmill stands on the outskirts of Banff like a stubborn old timer refusing to budge. It's a proper landmark if you know where to look - the sort of thing locals point out rather than tourists stumble upon by accident. The structure itself is the real draw here: a working (or at least intact) mill that speaks to the agricultural heritage of Aberdeenshire rather than the postcard-ready views you might expect elsewhere in the Highlands.

You'll get the most from it if you're interested in industrial heritage or agricultural history. It's not a dramatic stop - no towering visitor centre or gift shop nonsense - which means it works best as part of a broader wander around the Banff area rather than a destination in itself. The surrounding landscape is pleasant enough: rolling farmland with decent walks nearby if you're staying at one of the caravan sites dotted about - Gamrie Bay is just 1.4 miles down the road, Wester Bonnyton not much further. Both give you a solid base for exploring the wider region without being crammed into a tourist hotspot.

Allow an hour at most, unless you're genuinely keen on milling mechanics. No admission charge that I'm aware of, though it's worth checking locally when you arrive. The best time is late morning when the light's decent for photographs and the roads are quieter. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity rather than planning - perfectly reasonable as a quick detour between proper attractions, not worth driving hours for on its own.
