About Banff

Waves crash against red sandstone cliffs here, where Aberdeenshire meets the North Sea with proper dramatic flair. This working fishing port clings to the coastline, its Georgian townhouses stepping down towards a small harbour that still bustles with local boats bringing in their catch.

Banff proper sits just inland from the coast, connected to its more famous neighbour Macduff by a bridge across the River Deveron. The town centre feels quiet during weekdays, but there's substance beneath the sometimes sleepy exterior. Duff House, a magnificent baroque mansion designed by William Adam, anchors the cultural scene with its impressive art collection and grounds perfect for afternoon strolls.

Cullykhan Shore provides the best beach walking locally - a proper stretch of sand when the tide's out, though it gets wild when winter storms roll in. More sheltered options include Mill Shore, where rock pools keep children occupied for hours. Those after elevated views should tackle Hill of Findon, which rewards the climb with sweeping coastal panoramas.

For something completely different, the villages of Crovie and Gardenstown cling impossibly to cliff faces just east of town. Crovie viewpoint gives you the full perspective on this extraordinary settlement, where houses line up like dominoes along the shoreline. It's a bit of a trek to reach both villages, but well worth it for the sheer audacity of their locations.

Banff sits about 45 miles northwest of Aberdeen, easily reached via the A98 coastal road. The town makes an excellent base for exploring this rugged stretch of coastline, and camping nearby puts you within striking distance of some of Scotland's most spectacular cliff-top walks and hidden fishing villages.
