Wolfscote Hill

Standing at 1,424 feet above the Dove Valley, this limestone hill offers one of the finest views across the Peak District without the crowds that plague Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The walk up from Hartington takes about 45 minutes through proper Derbyshire countryside - dry stone walls, sheep, and that particular green that only seems to exist in this part of England.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Wolfscote Hill. The summit rewards you with panoramic views stretching from the Pennines to the Staffordshire moorlands, while the approach through Wolfscote Dale is lovely in its own right. Spring brings wildflowers to the limestone grassland, though the hill holds its appeal year-round.

Families should think twice - it's a proper climb with some steep sections that might test shorter legs. Allow half a day if you're walking from Hartington, less if you can park closer to the base. The hill fits perfectly into a walking holiday based around Buxton, with several holiday parks like Hartington Hills and Bank House Farm Campsite offering decent bases within striking distance.

No facilities up here, naturally - bring water and check the weather. The limestone can be slippery when wet, and the exposed summit catches every bit of wind going.
