Wood of Maryfield

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured tourist spot, Wood of Maryfield sits just outside Turriff in Aberdeenshire and gives you exactly what it says on the tin - trees, paths, and a decent stretch of legs. The woodland here isn't dramatic or particularly famous, but that's rather the point. You get peaceful trails through mixed forest without the crowds that clog up better-known Highland walks.

The wood works best for families who want an hour or so of gentle rambling, or anyone based at Turriff Caravan Park looking to burn off some energy without driving anywhere. The paths are straightforward enough that young kids won't get frustrated, though they're not manicured to within an inch of their lives either. Real forest floor, genuine quiet. You'll spot the occasional bird, maybe spot some wildlife in the undergrowth if you're lucky.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of - bring your own water. Admission appears to be free, and you can spend anything from 45 minutes to two hours here depending on which loops you fancy. Winter can be muddy, so decent boots help. It's the sort of place that won't feature in your holiday highlights reel, but it'll genuinely refresh you if you've been cooped up in a caravan for days. Not everyone needs a mountain or a waterfall. Sometimes trees are enough.
