Wykin Community Park

The wetland at Wykin, just outside Nuneaton, is one of those places you'd walk straight past if you didn't know what you were looking at. But that's precisely what makes it worthwhile. This is a proper nature reserve - reed beds, open water, and enough bird life to keep binoculars trained for a solid couple of hours.

What you're actually doing here is following paths through habitat that's been carefully managed for wildlife. In winter, you might spot overwintering wildfowl; spring brings the breeding season rush. It's the sort of place where you need patience and quiet footsteps, which rules out the very young or anyone expecting immediate drama. But if you're a birdwatcher, a keen photographer, or simply someone who enjoys walking without crowds, this delivers.

The reserve is free to visit, which is a genuine advantage when there are so many paying attractions competing for your attention. Time it for early morning if you want the best chance of seeing anything interesting - the wildlife clears off once the day gets busy. Allow an hour at minimum; two if you're serious about identification.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Bosworth Caravan Park is the closest at just over five miles - Wykin makes a solid half-day venture. It's not a destination in itself, but slotted into a wider Leicestershire trip, it fills the gap between bigger draws without fuss. Bring a coat regardless of season.
