Yatland Copse

The woodland around Yatland Copse feels like proper old-school Isle of Wight - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a small forest patch just inland from Yarmouth, dense enough to get lost in for an afternoon but not so vast you'll need a map and a packed lunch. The trees are mixed, mostly ancient woodland character, and once you're in among them the noise of the island falls away entirely.

Walkers will get the most from this. There are paths threading through, though they're not signposted in the usual way - it's more about following the clearest routes and doubling back if you hit a dead end. Kids can manage it fine if they're the type who like climbing over fallen logs and spotting insects. If your children need a playground and a café, look elsewhere. Bring wellies even in summer; it holds water.

It's free to access and there's no set visiting hours, which means you can arrive when it suits you. Allow an hour to properly explore without rushing. The light filters through the canopy in a way that makes afternoon visits genuinely lovely, though early morning is quieter still.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Camp Wight is closest at under two miles, or Tom's Eco Lodge and Tapnell Farm if you're after something more low-key - this works as a proper walk alternative to beach days. It won't thrill everyone, but for a slow morning among trees with genuine woodland atmosphere, it's worth the detour from Yarmouth.
