Yeadon Haw

The walk up Yeadon Haw takes about forty minutes from the car park, and it's one of those Yorkshire outcrops that rewards the effort without punishing your legs. You're looking at a proper viewpoint here - nothing fancy, just a stone trig marker and 300 metres of elevation that gives you sight lines across Leeds and out towards the Pennines. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the trip.

The ascent is straightforward, following paths through farmland and moorland. The terrain is mixed enough to keep walkers engaged but nothing technical. You'll pass through a landscape that's neither wild nor manicured, which is very West Yorkshire. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to country walks; it's the kind of thing a family could tackle between breakfast and lunch without drama.

Who gets most from it? Walkers using it as part of a longer ramble rather than a standalone outing. The view is good but not transcendent. Solo hikers and older teenagers looking for a solid leg-stretcher will be satisfied. Those staying at St Helena's Caravan Park or Clarion Lodge Campsite nearby - both less than two miles away - have an obvious option on the doorstep.

Go early if you want solitude. Late afternoon can get a bit crowded. There's parking at the base, and the whole experience is free. Allow two hours if you're not rushing. It's solid Yorkshire fell-walking, done properly and without pretension.
