Zip World Penrhyn Quarry

The old slate quarry at Penrhyn, just outside Bangor, has been transformed into one of Wales's more thrilling days out. Zip World has strung cables across the vast grey walls and flooded chambers, turning what was once an industrial scar into an adventure playground that actually impresses.

You're essentially flying across a 500-metre course suspended above the quarry floor, with the dramatic drop and still water below adding proper drama to the experience. There are multiple zip lines at different heights and speeds, so it's not just one go and done. The views from up there - across the quarry walls and out towards Snowdonia - are genuinely striking, though you're moving fast enough that you won't linger on them.

It's brilliant for teenagers and confident adults who want a proper adrenaline hit without needing serious mountaineering skills. Younger children can do some of the courses depending on their nerve and height. Allow a couple of hours minimum, though you'll spend more time getting geared up and waiting between goes than actually on the cables.

Book ahead - the place fills up on school holidays and weekends. It's paid admission and not cheap, but worth the outlay if you're after something memorable. The location near Bangor makes it an easy addition to a North Wales park break. Ogwen Bank Caravan and Lodge Park sits practically on the doorstep, while Llanberis Touring Park and Snowdon View Holiday Park are close enough for a day trip if you're staying further up the valley.
