Black Hill

Standing at 472 metres, this unassuming fell delivers proper views across Teesdale without the crowds you'd find on Yorkshire's more famous peaks. The summit sits about four miles southwest of Barnard Castle, making it a decent morning walk if you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area.

Walkers will appreciate the relatively gentle gradient - it's not the lung-busting climb you might expect. The path winds through typical Pennine moorland, with patches of heather and the odd grouse startling you from the undergrowth. From the top, you can see across to Cross Fell and the North Pennines on a clear day.

Families with older children who fancy a proper walk will find this manageable, though it's probably too much for little ones. Allow about three hours return from the nearest parking spot. The terrain can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

If you're based at Westgate Caravan & Camping Site or any of the parks around Barnard Castle, Black Hill makes for a good alternative to the busier fells further west. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid choice for stretching your legs and getting some fresh air into the lungs. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments - there's nowhere to grab a brew up there.
