Chathill

Miles of golden sand stretch north and south from this small coastal village, where wind-sculpted dunes roll inland towards working farmland. Chathill sits quietly between the dramatic coastlines of Beadnell and Bamburgh, making it an excellent base for exploring Northumberland's most spectacular beaches without the summer crowds.

The village itself is pleasantly understated. A few stone cottages, a railway halt on the East Coast Main Line, and that's about it. But step beyond the settlement and you'll find Annstead Dunes Nature Reserve - a wild expanse of marram grass and sandy hollows that feels properly remote despite being easily accessible. The dunes protect a fragile ecosystem of wildflowers and nesting birds.

Just inland, Annstead Burn winds through the countryside - less a lake than a meandering stream that's perfect for a gentle walk. History buffs will appreciate the atmospheric ruins of a 12th-century chapel, though you'll need to ask locally for directions as it's not well signposted.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The A1 runs just inland, and Chathill has its own railway station with direct services from Edinburgh and London. Alnwick lies 15 miles south for proper shops and restaurants, while Berwick-upon-Tweed is 20 miles north.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're within striking distance of Bamburgh Castle, the Farne Islands, and Holy Island, yet you'll return each evening to peaceful countryside rather than tourist-packed villages. The beaches here are genuinely spectacular - and refreshingly quiet compared to their famous neighbours.
