That famous twisted spire dominates the skyline for miles around - Chesterfield's wonky church tower is properly striking whether you're approaching from the motorway or walking through the old market square. The medieval streets still buzz with proper market town energy, especially on Saturdays when the outdoor market takes over the cobbled square that's been trading since 1204.

The town sits right on the edge of the Peak District, which means you get the best of both worlds. Proper shops and decent pubs in the centre, then rolling Derbyshire hills just minutes away. Walk up to Holymoorside and you'll find the old boundary stones marking ancient parish limits - there's something quite satisfying about stumbling across these weathered markers while exploring the footpaths.

Chatsworth House is barely twenty minutes by car, making this an excellent base for tackling the Peak District without paying tourist prices for accommodation. The nearby holiday parks like Darwin Forest put you within easy reach of both the market town amenities and the open moorland beyond.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A61 runs right through town, and Sheffield is just a quick hop up the road. The train station connects you to Manchester and Sheffield, though frankly you'll want a car to make the most of the surrounding countryside. Those boundary stones around Holymoorside won't visit themselves, and the network of footpaths leading into the Peaks is where this area really comes alive.
