Red sandstone buildings line the streets where Robert Burns once walked as an excise man, and the River Nith curves lazily through Scotland's largest town by area. This is proper Burns Country - the bard spent his final years here, and you can still visit his house on Mill Street and see his grave at St Michael's Churchyard.

The town sits in a lovely spot where three rivers converge, with the Solway coast just 15 minutes south and rolling Galloway hills stretching north. Burns House Museum tells his story well, while the elegant Georgian terraces around the centre give the place a refined feel that belies its frontier past.

Venturing beyond town, the landscape opens into something quite special. Loch Arthur makes for a peaceful afternoon walk, while the surrounding peaks like Cuil Hill and Long Fell offer proper hill walking with cracking views over the Solway Firth. The ancient Crannog site hints at much older settlements, and Drumcoltran Tower stands as a fine example of a medieval Scottish stronghold.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A75 brings you straight from the M74, and it's well connected by rail to Glasgow and points south. Carlisle is only 35 miles away across the border.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Brandedleys or Marthrown of Mabie puts you right in the heart of Burns Country, with easy access to both the town's literary attractions and the superb walking in the Galloway hills. You're also perfectly placed for day trips to the coast or deeper into the Southern Uplands.
