Maidenhead

The Thames runs right through the heart of this Berkshire market town, and you can feel its pull everywhere you go. Maidenhead sits perfectly between London and the Cotswolds, making it feel both accessible and surprisingly rural once you venture beyond the high street. Ray Mill Island splits the river here, creating lovely walking spots that most visitors completely miss.

BCA Zoo makes for a proper family day out - it's compact enough that little ones won't get overwhelmed, but there's enough variety to keep everyone entertained. The nearby BCA Picnic Site is handy if you want to make a full day of it. For something completely different, head to Ashley Hill or Dungrovehill Wood for walks that feel miles from anywhere despite being minutes from the M4.

The town centre itself has seen better days, truth be told. But venture towards the river and things improve dramatically. Ivor Novello's old house still stands as a reminder of Maidenhead's theatrical connections - the composer lived here during his heyday in the 1920s. St. James the Less Church is worth a look if you're into Victorian architecture.

Getting here couldn't be easier - direct trains from London Paddington take 25 minutes, and the M4 puts you right on the doorstep. Reading is just down the road if you need a bigger shopping fix.

Staying at one of the riverside parks like Hurley Riverside Park puts you right in the Thames Valley action. You're perfectly placed for Windsor Castle (15 minutes), Henley-on-Thames, or striking out into the Chiltern Hills. The National Trust woodland at Pinkneys Drive offers cracking walks without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots.
