Oakmere

Dense woodland sweeps right up to the doorstep here, with Delamere Forest creating an almost mystical backdrop that changes dramatically with the seasons. This Cheshire village sits in prime walking country where ancient trees meet open heathland, and the air carries that particular freshness you only get deep in proper countryside.

Delamere Forest dominates the landscape - and rightly so. It's one of the largest areas of woodland in the northwest, criss-crossed with cycling trails and footpaths that range from gentle strolls to proper hill walking. The forest feels genuinely wild in places, especially around areas like Royalty Covert where you can walk for an hour without seeing another soul.

Water features heavily too. Cuddington Pool makes for a lovely circular walk, while the River Weaver winds through the broader landscape offering glimpses of narrowboat life at spots like Dutton Locks. These waterways add a different dimension to the walking, breaking up the woodland with open vistas.

For something completely different, the Lewis Carroll Centre celebrates the area's most famous literary connection - the Alice in Wonderland author had strong ties to this part of Cheshire. Garden enthusiasts will find proper treats at Stonyford Cottage Gardens, where the tea room does excellent cake alongside the plant nursery browsing.

Northwich lies about 10 miles southeast if you need proper shops or a railway station. The M56 runs nearby, making this surprisingly accessible despite feeling properly rural. Staying at one of the local parks puts you right in the thick of the forest walks, with several sites offering direct access to the woodland trails without any car journeys needed.
