Red sandstone buildings line the market square where sheep farmers still gather on wet Tuesday mornings. This is Penrith as it's always been - a proper Cumbrian market town that serves the fells rather than tourists, though plenty pass through on their way to the lakes.

Walk the circumference and you'll understand why our ancestors chose this spot. Giant's Grave and Giant's Thumb add to the prehistoric puzzle - atmospheric sites that most visitors miss entirely.

Castlesteads tells a different story, where Roman stones were later built into medieval walls. The layers of history here run deep. More recent but equally moving is the Boer War Memorial, known locally as the Black Angel, standing sentinel in the town centre.

For contemporary culture, Penrith Players keeps local theatre alive, while Gallery & Studios showcases regional artists. The train station connects directly to the West Coast mainline - handy for getting here without wrestling with Lake District traffic.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into town for supplies and a proper pub dinner, yet far enough out to wake up to fell views instead of car parks. The surrounding countryside rolls away towards Ullswater and the high fells, with Knipe Scar offering decent walking straight from your doorstep. It's the smart way to do the Lakes - base yourself where the locals live, not where the tour buses stop.
