Saint Agnes

Tin mines once dominated this rugged patch of Cornwall's north coast, their engine houses still standing like granite sentinels against the Atlantic winds. Saint Agnes sits on some of the most dramatic coastline in the county, where clifftop paths wind between heather-covered headlands and mining heritage.

The village itself feels properly Cornish - stone cottages, a couple of decent pubs, and none of the tourist tat that swamps some coastal spots. It's the landscape that draws you here though. Chapel Porth beach lies just down the coastal path, a stunning cove where you can grab a proper Cornish pasty from the café before tackling the coast walk.

Walking is what Saint Agnes does best. The South West Coast Path offers some cracking stretches here, with views across to Godrevy Lighthouse on clear days. Head inland and you'll find Beacon Cottage Museum tucked away, telling the story of the area's mining past without making a song and dance about it.

Getting here takes a bit of planning - it's about eight miles from Truro, the nearest proper town with a railway station. The coastal road winds through typical Cornish countryside of stone walls and small fields before you catch your first glimpse of the sea.

Staying at one of the holiday parks nearby makes perfect sense. Places like Perran View Holiday Park put you right on the doorstep of this spectacular coastline, while spots like Trevarth Holiday Park offer a quieter base for exploring both the coast and the old mining country inland. You're well placed for day trips to St Ives or Newquay, but honestly, there's enough drama in the immediate area to keep you busy for a proper fortnight.
