About Stoke-on-Trent

Six pottery towns that merged into one - that's the story behind this industrial powerhouse that shaped Britain's ceramic industry for centuries. The kilns may have cooled, but Stoke-on-Trent still pulses with creative energy and a fierce pride in its heritage.

You'll find proper character here, especially around the old pottery districts. Each of the six towns - Burslem, Tunstall, Stoke, Hanley, Longton, and Fenton - keeps its own identity. Hanley's the shopping heart, while Burslem feels more authentic with its bottle kilns still standing.

The surrounding Staffordshire countryside offers brilliant escapes. Caverswall Castle sits just south, a medieval fortress that's been beautifully preserved. The Foxfield Steam Railway chugs through lovely farmland, with stops at Dilhorne Park and Caverswall Road - perfect for a leisurely afternoon out. For walkers, the wooded hills around Callow Hill and Blakeley Bank provide cracking views across the Potteries.

Booth-Hall Wood and the other forests dotted around make for proper woodland walks. Out Wood and Broadoak Wood are particularly good for families, while Windyhouse Wood feels more remote if you want proper solitude.

Getting here's straightforward - the M6 runs right past, and there's decent rail connections to Manchester and Birmingham. It's not the prettiest town in England, granted, but there's something honest about its red-brick streets and industrial heritage.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for easy town access but far enough out to enjoy the rolling Staffordshire hills. Plus, you've got Alton Towers just down the road - though that's another story entirely.
