Four million visitors a year can't all be wrong, but they do make Stratford-upon-Avon feel rather overwhelming at times. Shakespeare's hometown trades heavily on its literary credentials, and you'll find the Bard's presence everywhere from his grave at Holy Trinity Church to his funerary monument that draws endless queues.

The town itself is properly lovely when you catch it between coach parties. Tudor timber-framed buildings line the streets, many housing galleries like the Courtyard Gallery where local artists showcase their work. St Helen's Church and The Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin offer peaceful respites from the tourist trail.

Beyond the Shakespeare industry, the surrounding Warwickshire countryside provides excellent walking territory. Windmill Hill offers cracking views across the Avon Valley, while Alscot Park nature reserve gives you proper countryside just minutes from town. The River Meadow Dog Walking Fields are popular with locals - a good sign that there's life here beyond the tour groups.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Regular trains run from Birmingham and London, though parking in town can be a nightmare during peak season. The M40 junction 15 puts you within striking distance if you're driving.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Stratford makes perfect sense. You'll dodge the town centre accommodation prices and have easy access to explore the wider area. Places like Welford Riverside Park put you right on the River Avon, while sites like The Apple Farm offer a proper rural feel. From any of these bases, you're well positioned for day trips to Warwick Castle or the Cotswolds, making Stratford more than just a one-trick pony.
