Addyfield Wood

The woodland around Addyfield, just outside Ulverston, is one of those places you stumble into rather than plan to visit. It's a proper working forest with a decent network of paths that wind through mixed broadleaves and conifers, offering good shelter even when the weather's turning. The terrain's gently rolling rather than challenging, which means families with younger legs won't struggle, though it's not a stroll either.

You get a real sense of scale walking through here. The trees are established enough to feel like you're away from things, yet you're only minutes from the coast and the Windermere holiday parks dotted around the area. Park Cliffe or Hill of Oaks make decent bases if you're camping nearby and want a proper forest walk without driving far.

It's the kind of woodland that rewards you for turning up. No crowds, no entrance fees, no nonsense. Bring decent boots though - the paths hold water after rain. Allow a couple of hours for a half-decent circuit, longer if you're the type to stop and look at birds. Winter's actually quite nice here when the canopy's thin. The walks aren't dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point. If you're after proper forest peace rather than peaks and vistas, Addyfield delivers. Not a headline attraction, but honest woodland walking done well.
