Astley's Plantation

Astley's Plantation sits just outside Ulverston, a proper woodland walk through mature forest that's been here long enough to feel genuinely old. You're wandering through dense tree cover - mostly conifers mixed with beech and oak - along what's essentially a network of forest paths that wind through the canopy. It's not dramatic or particularly famous, which is rather the point.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young kids might manage an hour poking about, but it's not a destination with facilities or attractions tacked on. There's no visitor centre, no refreshments, no grand viewpoint at the top. You come here to walk, breathe forest air, and enjoy the sound of your own footsteps on needles and leaf litter. The paths are easy enough but can be muddy after rain - proper waterproof boots advisable.

The nearest towns are Ulverston itself and you're within striking distance of the Lakes proper, which means this works as a quieter alternative to the honeypot walks further north. If you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby - Hill of Oaks or Newby Bridge are just down the road - Astley's makes a solid half-day leg-stretch. It's the sort of place you go when you want to escape crowds rather than tick boxes.

Allow two hours if you want to explore properly. Go midweek if possible. Bring a decent map or download the route beforehand - waymarking can be sparse in places.
