An Dunan, dun site

Standing on a windswept hillside just outside Oban, An Dunan is one of those archaeological sites that rewards the effort to find it. What you're looking at are the substantial remains of an Iron Age dun - essentially a fortified settlement from around 2,000 years ago. The stone walls are still clearly defined, rising from the rocky outcrop where someone decided this was the place to make a stand against Bronze Age uncertainty.

It's genuinely atmospheric rather than showy. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. Just the bones of an ancient fort, the wind off the water, and silence. Expect to spend 30 minutes here, maybe longer if you're into archaeology or want to sit with the view back towards Oban. The surrounding countryside is proper wild - not a manicured heritage site.

Historians will absolutely get the most from this. Kids might find it interesting for five minutes before asking if there's a cafe. Casual walkers on a bigger loop around Oban could easily incorporate it, though you'll need reasonably sturdy legs and waterproofs - this isn't a gentle amble.

There's no formal admission charge that I'm aware of, and you can access it pretty much anytime. If you're staying at Oban Holiday Park or Loch View Luxury Pod, it's a worthwhile half-hour detour from your base. Weather matters here. Come on a clear day and the view across the Firth of Lorn is worth the trek alone. Come in driving rain and you'll wonder why you bothered.
