Apley Head

Getting to this remote lake involves a proper trek through Clumber Park's woodland, but that's half the appeal. Apley Head sits deep in the forest near Worksop, reachable only on foot along winding paths that can get muddy after rain. The lake itself is fairly small and feels wonderfully secluded - you might have it entirely to yourself on weekdays.

Fishing enthusiasts will find this spot particularly rewarding, with decent pike and perch if you know what you're doing. The surrounding woodland makes it lovely for a quiet picnic, though families with young children might find the walk a bit much. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - plenty of space for a good run around.

Timing matters. Early morning visits offer the best chance of spotting wildlife, while summer afternoons can get surprisingly busy with anglers. The walk takes about 45 minutes each way from the nearest car park, so factor in a good two hours minimum.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Clumber Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or National Trust - Clumber Park, this makes for a decent half-day excursion. Just don't expect facilities - bring everything you need and take your rubbish home.
