Ashton's Wood

Walking into Ashton's Wood feels like stepping back into proper countryside. This mixed woodland sits just outside Worksop and offers the kind of quiet forest experience that doesn't require a major expedition - you can be under the trees within minutes of leaving town.

The wood itself is straightforward: mature trees, woodland floor covered in leaf litter, the sort of place where you might spot deer if you're lucky and quiet enough. There are paths threading through, though they're not manicured or signposted to death, which is rather the point. It's a working woodland, not a theme park version of a forest.

Walkers will get the most from this. Half an hour to an hour is about right unless you're the type to sit on a log and read for hours. Kids might find it pleasant for a short ramble, but there's no playground nonsense or visitor centre to keep them occupied, so don't expect a full day here.

Geographically, it slots nicely into a wider Worksop area itinerary. Clumber Park - the National Trust property - is only 2.5 miles away and offers considerably more infrastructure if you need it: grounds, a lake, the lot. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby, Ashton's Wood works as a morning walk before breakfast or an evening stretch of the legs. On its own merits, it's honest woodland - no pretence, just trees. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy genuine quiet.
