Aqueduct Plantation

The woodland at Aqueduct Plantation spreads across the hillside above Coalbrookdale like something from a different England entirely. Ancient trees tower overhead, their roots gripping the steep terrain, and the whole place has that deep-forest quiet that makes you actually notice the birdsong.

It's a proper walking spot rather than a sit-and-stare attraction. The terrain is steep in places - bring decent boots if you're planning anything beyond a gentle wander - and you'll need at least an hour to get a feel for the place, longer if you're taking photographs or just moving slowly. The canopy is thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which is rather welcome if you're visiting during the summer holidays.

This is walkers' territory, really. Families with young children might find the climbs frustrating, but teenagers and anyone with reasonable fitness will enjoy threading through the trees. The forest has genuine character - it's not manicured or visitor-focused, which is exactly why it works.

Geographically, you're in proper industrial heritage country here. Coalbrookdale itself is only a stone's throw away, so you could easily combine this with the museums and ironworks scattered through the valley. No visitor facilities to speak of, so come prepared.
