Ast Wood

Ast Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Ledbury, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a mixed forest - oak, ash, the usual suspects - with decent paths that don't demand hiking boots, though they can be muddy after rain. You're looking at anything from a quick 30-minute ramble to a couple of hours if you want to explore the full extent of it.

The appeal is straightforward: trees, fresh air, and enough space to feel like you've left town without actually going far. If you've got young kids, they'll enjoy the natural playground aspect for a bit, though it won't keep them entertained all day. Serious walkers will find it pleasant but not exactly demanding. Photographers might get something decent on a good light day, but don't expect dramatic vistas.

It's free to access, which is the main selling point. No visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Spring and early summer are best - everything's green and the canopy's dense enough to block out the worst of the heat.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - Yew Tree Farm is practically on the doorstep - Ast Wood works as a morning or afternoon filler. It's not a destination in itself, but it'll scratch that woodland itch without requiring a long drive from Ledbury. Couple it with a proper walk elsewhere in Herefordshire and you've got yourself a decent day out.
