Aviemore ring cairn and stone circle

You'll find yourself standing in open moorland just outside Aviemore, staring at a ring of stones that's been here for roughly four thousand years. The cairn - a substantial mound of stones at the centre - is surrounded by a circle of upright slabs, weathered and grey against the Highland sky. It's genuinely atmospheric, especially when the clouds roll in low and the landscape feels properly ancient.

This is proper Bronze Age stuff. People built this for burial or ritual purposes, and walking around it gives you a tangible sense of being somewhere that mattered once. The site doesn't require much climbing - the ground is relatively flat - so families with younger kids can manage it without complaint.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though winter months can make the ground boggy underfoot.
