Craigellachie National Nature Reserve (Entrance)

The entrance to Craigellachie sits just outside Aviemore, and it's worth stopping for even if you've only got half an hour. This is proper Scottish upland - a nature reserve that takes in ancient woodland, open moorland, and one of those views that actually justifies the hype. From the car park, you can see for miles across the Cairngorms, and on a clear day it's genuinely stunning.

The walking options here suit most abilities. There are gentle woodland trails if you're not after anything strenuous, but the main pull is climbing up through the trees to open moorland. It's not a brutal slog - most people manage it in under two hours - but you'll feel like you've earned the views at the top. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. Golden eagles work this patch, and you'll likely spot red grouse, mountain hares, and various raptors depending on season.

Both Highland Glen Holiday Park and Dalraddy Holiday Park are within striking distance, making this an easy morning or afternoon outing during a park-based holiday. The reserve is free to access, and there's no formal opening hours - it's one of those places you can visit whenever suits you. Winter can be dramatic up here, but spring and autumn are probably your best bet for decent paths and reliable weather.

Historians will appreciate that this landscape has been worked for centuries, though you won't find many obvious ruins. It's more about the feel of the place - empty, wild, and properly Highland.
