Rothiemurchus

The Cairngorms rise up around you as soon as you step into Rothiemurchus, and you understand straight away why this estate matters. Spanning nearly 50,000 acres of ancient woodland, moorland and mountains near Aviemore, it's one of Scotland's largest privately owned estates and genuinely one of the best bits of the Highlands for proper walking.

What you're really doing here is exploring a working landscape. There are trails ranging from gentle riverside walks to serious hill climbs into the Cairngorms themselves. The forest floor is thick with pine and heather, birdsong is constant, and on a clear day the views across the peaks will stop you mid-stride. Wildlife watching is proper good too - red squirrels, golden eagles, osprey if you're lucky.

Historically, this place tells the story of Highland land management over centuries. The family have owned it since the 1600s and it shows in how the estate is maintained and how carefully they've balanced conservation with access.

It's free to explore, though some areas have seasonal restrictions during stalking season (check before you go). You'll want at least half a day minimum, though serious walkers lose entire days here. The visitor centre near Aviemore has maps and can advise on conditions.

If you're staying at Highland Glen Holiday Park or Dalraddy Holiday Park - both within a few miles - Rothiemurchus becomes your playground. Families with older kids and keen walkers get the most from it. Young children might find the longer routes hard going, but shorter trails work fine. Come spring for nesting birds, autumn for the colours. Summer gets busy with tourists.
