Bankhead Wood

The forest floor here is thick with pine needles and moss, the kind that muffles your footsteps completely. Bankhead Wood, just outside Moffat in Dumfries & Galloway, is a proper woodland walk through mixed conifer plantation - nothing fancy, but genuinely peaceful. You get mature trees, decent paths that don't require mountaineering boots, and enough shade that it's brilliant on a scorching summer day.

It's the sort of place where walkers actually prefer it to the honeypot spots. No crowds, no ticketed car parks, just forest. The paths are well-maintained enough for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground, though pushchairs would be a struggle. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which route you take - there's flexibility here rather than a rigid circuit.

Timing matters. Spring brings birdsong; autumn the smell of damp earth and decay in the best possible way. Winter's fine too if you don't mind the shorter daylight. Summer can be muggy under the canopy.

For anyone based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Howslack Farm caravan site - both just up the road - this makes an ideal morning or late-afternoon outing without needing to drive far. It pairs well with the town itself if you want a gentle day. Not a destination in its own right, but absolutely worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy a proper walk without the tourist infrastructure.
