Banks Hill

Standing at 462 metres, this modest fell offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Yorkshire Dales without demanding the lung-busting effort of its loftier neighbours. The summit sits roughly 3 miles northeast of Skipton, making it an accessible half-day walk for anyone staying in the area.

What strikes you first about Banks Hill is how quickly you gain height for relatively little sweat. The ascent from the nearest parking spots takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, following well-worn sheep tracks through typical Dales pasture. Nothing too technical here - just honest uphill walking through stone-walled fields.

Families with older children (say 8 and up) will manage this comfortably, though toddlers might find it a slog. The real payoff comes at the top where you get proper panoramic views towards Pen-y-ghent and the Three Peaks, plus a lovely sweep down Wharfedale. On clear days, you can pick out the distinctive bulk of Ingleborough on the horizon.

Allow 2-3 hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the summit views and perhaps spot the occasional red kite circling overhead. It's free walking, naturally, and works well as morning exercise if you're based at one of the nearby sites like Bolton Abbey Estate or the glamping options around Malham. Best avoided in thick mist when the navigation gets trickier and the views vanish completely.
