There's something oddly satisfying about watching a steam locomotive actually work - all that hissing, clanking, and sheer effort of moving tonnes of metal through the Yorkshire countryside. The Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway runs heritage trains along a four-mile stretch between Bolton Abbey station and Embsay, giving you a proper old-fashioned ride through the Wharfedale valley.

The line itself opened in 1888 and rattled along commercially until 1961, when passenger services stopped. Volunteers brought it back to life decades later, and now they run regular weekend services during the season - mostly steam, occasionally diesel for variety. You'll roll past moorland and woodland, cross a couple of viaducts, and get views toward the Pennines that justify the ticket price alone.

It's brilliant for families with children old enough to sit still for forty minutes - younger ones sometimes struggle with the noise and soot. Enthusiasts love it, obviously. If you're walking in the area anyway, Bolton Abbey itself is worth a proper explore after your train journey.

The station at Bolton Abbey sits just a mile from the actual abbey ruins and close to several caravan parks - Catgill Farm is barely ten minutes away if you're basing yourself there. Combine this with walks along the Wharfe or a scramble up Simon's Seat, and you've got a decent day sorted.
