Ward Hill

Standing at just over 400 metres, this modest Yorkshire Dales peak offers surprisingly rewarding views without the leg-burning effort of its more famous neighbours. The walk up Ward Hill from Skipton takes about an hour if you're reasonably fit, following well-marked footpaths through typical dales countryside of dry stone walls and grazing sheep.

Families with older children will find it manageable, though the final section gets a bit steep and can be muddy after rain. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no rocky outcrop or trig point - but the panoramic views across Wharfedale more than compensate. On clear days you can spot Pen-y-ghent in the distance.

Walkers staying at nearby holiday parks like Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Catgill Farm will appreciate having this on their doorstep. It's a proper starter hill for those building up to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and experienced ramblers often use it as a warm-up before heading to more challenging fells.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to enjoy the views and perhaps a picnic at the top. Best tackled in dry conditions when the paths aren't slippery. It won't feature in any dramatic Instagram posts, but Ward Hill delivers exactly what you'd want from a Yorkshire Dales walk without the crowds.
