Welly Walk Bolton Abbey

The River Wharfe cuts through this stretch of moorland like it's got somewhere to be, and the Welly Walk follows it faithfully for a proper couple of hours. You're walking through the Bolton Abbey Estate, one of those Yorkshire landscapes that doesn't need drama - the water does the work, tumbling over rocks, the banks thick with riverside vegetation. It's a straightforward riverside trail, manageable for families with decent boots, though after heavy rain it lives up to its name. The walk doesn't demand much from you physically, which means you can actually look around instead of concentrating on your feet.

This one rewards walkers over casual strollers. You'll see the remains of the priory in the distance and various old bridges, but the real pull is the river itself and the peace. Kids who like splashing about in streams will find plenty to occupy them; anyone after a two-hour ramble with proper Yorkshire views will come away satisfied. Skipton's just five or six miles away if you need supplies or a decent lunch.

Several campsites cluster nearby - Catgill Farm is barely half a mile off, and the Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is under two miles away, which means you could base yourself proper locally and walk this one morning, explore elsewhere the next. It's free to access, naturally, and open year-round. Best in spring when the water's high and everything's properly green. Autumn works too if you've got time and energy.
