Bannerdale Crags (Wainwright)

The walk up Bannerdale Crags is a proper Lake District fell experience without the crowds you'll hit on Catbells or Skiddaw. From Keswick, it's a straightforward approach that builds steadily through woodland before opening onto genuine mountain terrain. The summit itself sits at 1,902 feet - not high by fell standards, but the views across Borrowdale and towards Helvellyn make it feel significant.

What makes this one worthwhile is the walk itself. The path winds past Blencathra's eastern flank, and there's a nice moment where the landscape suddenly opens up and you realise how much height you've gained. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the car park, depending on your pace and how often you stop for the views. It's not a rock scramble, but it's steep enough to feel like proper walking rather than a stroll.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the sustained climb tedious. Serious walkers after a quick fell day absolutely should do it - you can tick off another Wainwright and be back in Keswick for a decent pub lunch.

It's completely free and open year-round, though winter brings loose rock and mud. The nearest camping options include Ewe Love Camping Pods just 2.6 miles away and Carrock Glamping Pods at 3.5 miles, both handily close for an early start. Pair it with walks around Borrowdale or a trip up Skiddaw for a proper hill-walking break.
