Barden Tower

Stone walls rise from the heather like broken teeth, and that's precisely what makes Barden Tower so compelling. This 15th-century hunting lodge, built by the powerful Clifford family, sits proud on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales with views that stretch across Wharfedale to the fells beyond.

What remains is atmospheric rather than complete - a roofless shell with enough intact walls to fire the imagination. The tower itself stands three storeys high, with window frames that now frame nothing but sky. Kids will love scrambling about the ruins (though keep an eye on them near the drops), while adults can appreciate the craftsmanship in the surviving stonework.

History buffs get their money's worth here. This was where the notorious Henry Clifford, known as the 'Butcher', plotted his various schemes. The tower later served as a retreat for scholars and astronomers in the 17th century.

Access appears to be free, and you can wander around at will. Allow an hour unless you're planning a longer walk - several footpaths radiate from here across the moors. The ruins work well as part of a Dales holiday, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan Club or Howgill Lodge. Just a short drive from Skipton, it's an easy detour that rewards with proper Yorkshire atmosphere and sweeping valley views.
