Hut Crag

Standing at 420 metres, this modest fell offers surprisingly good views across Wharfedale without the slog of tackling the bigger Yorkshire Dales peaks. The walk up from Burnsall takes about an hour through typical Dales countryside - dry stone walls, sheep pastures, and that particular North Yorkshire blend of green and grey that looks lovely even on drizzly days.

From the summit, you'll get proper views south towards Ilkley Moor and east across the valley. It's not Pen-y-ghent, mind you, but for families with younger children or anyone wanting a gentler introduction to fell walking, Hut Crag fits the bill nicely. The path is well-defined most of the way, though it does get a bit boggy after rain.

Walkers based at nearby sites like Bolton Abbey Estate or Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club will find this makes a decent half-day outing. You could easily combine it with a visit to Bolton Abbey itself or a pint in Burnsall afterwards. The whole circuit, including a proper pub lunch, makes for a thoroughly satisfying day out. Just don't expect dramatic mountain scenery - this is more about gentle exercise and pleasant countryside than heart-stopping vistas.
