Whinhaugh

The walk up Whinhaugh from Skipton side rewards you with proper Yorkshire moorland views without breaking a sweat - it's a modest summit but the kind of place locals favour when they want to clear their heads without the tourist crowds of the higher peaks. You get moorland grouse and bilberry underfoot, and on a clear day the prospect opens out across Wharfedale towards the Pennines. It's the sort of fell that takes most people two hours round trip, including a proper pause at the top for a brew.

Walkers are the real audience here - family groups with teenagers will manage it fine, but it's not a quick dash-up-and-back kind of peak. The ground can be boggy in places depending on recent weather, so decent boots matter. There's no admission fee because there's nothing to charge for - you just park sensibly near Skipton and get going.

It slots nicely into a broader Wharfedale exploring trip. Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just 2.6 miles away, making it a logical base if you're camping in the area. From there, Whinhaugh becomes a morning mission before pottering down to the valley floor attractions. The walk itself is straightforward navigation but feels miles away from anything developed - which is rather the point.
